A green labyrinth born from the sea
Just minutes from La Posada de los Tumpis lies one of Peru's most fascinating ecosystems: the Mangroves of Puerto Pizarro in Tumbes.
Glide by canoe through its channels lined with roots rising from the water and observe a wide variety of migratory birds including herons, frigatebirds, and white ibis. This place is known as the "nursery of the sea" for its remarkable biodiversity.
Along the way you'll also learn about the lives of artisanal fishermen and, time permitting, enjoy a freshly made ceviche right in front of the mangrove.
A unique experience where nature, local culture, and the sea meet in perfect harmony.
The Tumbes Mangroves form Peru's only mangrove ecosystem, declared a National Sanctuary in 1988. They extend across more than 2,972 hectares along the mouth of the Tumbes River and its adjacent estuaries, forming a labyrinth of navigable channels surrounded by aerial roots rising from the water.
This ecosystem acts as a true nursery of the sea: its warm, nutrient-rich waters are the nursery and refuge of hundreds of species of fish, crustaceans, and mollusks. The network of mangrove roots creates an ideal microhabitat for spawning and larval protection, making it the foundation of the entire marine food chain in northern Peru.
The Sanctuary is home to more than 200 species of birds, both migratory and resident. Among the most emblematic are the magnificent frigatebird, the Peruvian pelican, the tricolored heron, the white ibis, and the green kingfisher. For birdwatching enthusiasts, it is one of the finest bird-spotting locations in northern Peru.
During the canoe tour, local guides — most of them artisanal fishermen from the area — share their knowledge of the ecosystem and the history of the communities that have lived in harmony with the mangroves for generations. At the end of the trip, you can enjoy a fresh ceviche prepared by the fishermen themselves, with the authentic flavors of Tumbes.
